The Team
Thessaloniki Social Atlas is affiliated with the Research Unit for South European Cities in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development, School of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh).
Chief Scientific Editors are Evangelia Athanassiou, professor AUTh, Loukas Triantis, assistant professor AUTh (coordinator), and Charikleia (Charis) Christodoulou, associate professor AUTh. Costas Cheliotis, dr. architect, is responsible for the editing of mappings and visual illustrations.
The members of the Editorial Board who evaluate the articles are Evangelia Athanassiou, professor AUTh, Stavros Alifragkis, dr. architect, Athina Vitopoulou, associate professor AUTh, Elisavet Thoidou, professor AUTh, Panos Hatziprokopiou, associate professor AUTh, and Charikleia (Charis) Christodoulou, associate professor AUTh. On a case-by-case basis, the articles are evaluated by other associates.
The Thessaloniki Social Atlas essentially rests on the contributions of authors, both younger and more experienced researchers who are willing to contribute by sharing their work. An intention of crucial importance is to constantly expand the group of contributing authors.
The initial idea for the Thessaloniki Social Atlas derived from communication with the Editors of Athens Social Atlas, Thomas Maloutas, em. professor Harokopio University, Stavros Spyrellis, researcher at the National Centre for Social Research, and Iris Polyzos, dr. sociologist, NTUA.

Scientific editors
Evangelia Athanassiou
Evangelia Athanassiou studied architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and pursued graduate studies at the University of York (MA)
and the University of Edinburgh (PhD). Her doctoral thesis developed a critical approach to urban sustainability. She has taught at Hellenic Open University,University of Thessaly and the School of Spatial Planning and Development of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 2009 she teaches urban planning and design at the School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has published in international and greek journals and conferences. Her research focuses on critical approaches to urban sustainability, urban political ecology, public space management and participatory urbanism.
Loukas Triantis
Assistant professor in the School of Architecture, AUTh with knowledge field Urban Planning, Urban Design, and the Production of Space.
Architect (NTUA) with an MSc in urban geography (LSE) and a Phd in urban and regional planning (NTUA).
He has practiced urban planning (2009-2015), worked as a policy consultant for the Ministry of Environment and Energy (2017-2019), and as the coordinator of the LSE Athens Urban Age Task Force (2020-2022). His research interests focus on the social, political, and institutional aspects of spatial planning, development, and governance.
Charis Christodoulou
Associate Professor at the School of Architecture AUTh, with field of knowledge in urban design and planning along contemporary issues of urban geography.
She studied architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and urban design at the Joint Centre for Urban Design in Oxford Brookes University. Her PhD thesis (AUTh) focused in urban planning, urbanization and social exclusion processes.
Her scientific interests refer to urban transformation, planning processes and intervention programs in urban, peri-urban and urbanized space, taking care about the human making of contemporary cities, settlements and landscapes. Her main research field is the city and wider area of Thessaloniki. She has collaborated for more than 20 years with Municipalities in Greece and has gained international distinctions for urban design projects.

Kostas Cheliotis
Kostas Cheliotis is a researcher and software developer. His main research interests focus on spatial modelling and computational simulation, data analysis and data visualization, and cartography.
He completed a degree in architecture and urban planning at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece in 2012, and holds an MRes (2013) and PhD (2019) on Advanced Spatial Analysis from the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), University College London.

Stavros Alifragkis
Dr Stavros Alifragkis is a graduate of the Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2002).
He has received two MPhil degrees, on architecture and the moving image from the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge (2003) and on architectural theory and history from the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens (2004). He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010). His research interests bridge architectural history and theory with art.
Athina Vitopoulou
Athina Vitopoulou is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (architect eng. AUTH,
DEA Projet architectural et urbain: théories et dispositifs, Ecoles d’Architecture and Institut Français d’Urbanisme-Université Paris 8, PhD EHESS, Paris, Grand Prix de Thèse sur la Ville 2011). She has developed rich research, teaching and writing activity on issues related to the theory and practice of urban design and planning, environmental design, urban policies, land policies, mechanisms and processes of urban space production, urban history and town planning history, institutional framework of spatial planning, protection and enhancement of urban cultural heritage. She has published in scientific journals, conference proceedings and collective works. She has participated in national and European research programs and as a team member in urban design and planning projects and architectural competitions. She has also been a member of organizing and scientific committees of conferences, symposia and workshops and has participated in the organisation, documentation, and design of architectural exhibitions.
Ελισάβετ Θωίδου
H Ελισάβετ Θωίδου, είναι καθηγήτρια Χωροταξίας και Περιφερειακού Σχεδιασμού στο Τμήμα Μηχανικών Χωροταξίας και Ανάπτυξης
(ΤΜΧΑ) της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής του ΑΠΘ. Είναι διπλ. Αρχιτέκτονας Μηχανικός (ΑΠΘ, 1983) με μεταπτυχιακό δίπλωμα στην Περιφερειακή Ανάπτυξη (Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο, 1991) και διδακτορικό δίπλωμα από το Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων του ΑΠΘ / Τομέας Πολεοδομίας Χωροταξίας και Περιφ. Ανάπτυξης (2005). Από το 2006 δίδαξε/διδάσκει θεωρητικά και εργαστηριακά μαθήματα χωρικού σχεδιασμού στοΤΜΧΑ. Δίδαξε σε Προγράμματα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών των Τμημάτων Πολιτικών Μηχανικών και Τοπογράφων και Αγρονόμων Μηχανικών του ΑΠΘ, του Τμήματος Γεωγραφίας του Χαροκόπειου Πανεπιστημίου. Έχει δημοσιευμένο και ερευνητικό έργο για θέματα χωρικού σχεδιασμού / χωροταξίας / χωρικής ανάπτυξης στην Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη με έμφαση τα τελευταία χρόνια σε ζητήματα κρίσης, κλιματικής αλλαγής και ανθεκτικότητας των πόλεων και των περιφερειών.
Panos Hatziprokopiou
Panos Hatziprokopiou is Associate Professor at the School of Spatial Planning & Development (Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki)
where he teaches courses on human geography and urban sociology. He studies Economics (University of Macedonia), Sociology (Essex) and Human Geography (Sussex).
His research interests focus on processes of settlement, inhabitance and socioeconomic incorporation of migrant populations in urban settings, as well as on topics of urban social geography related to diversity and inequalities in urban space, the housing question and urban transformations.

Sotiria Alexiadou
Postdoctoral Researcher and Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Architecture, Polytechnic School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Sotiria Alexiadou was born in Thessaloniki. Studied Architecture at the University of Thessaly (2007). Attended the MSc. in Urban Strategies, Applied Arts University Vienna (2010) and the MSc. in Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2016). Earned her doctorate from the University of Thessaly’s Architecture Department (2022). Her research focuses on architecture and urban development mechanisms of the 20thc. Participated in teaching teams of architecture design classes at the University of Cyprus, the University of Thessaly, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in design teams of architectural competitions with distinctions. Her research and architecture projects were published and presented at conferences and exhibitions.
Athina Arampatzi
HFRI Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of Spatial Planning and Development, AUTH
Athina Arampatzi is PI, HFRI Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Dept. of Spatial Planning and Development (AUTH). She holds a PhD degree in Social Geography ( University of Leeds, UK), an MSc in Urban Sociology (University of Amsterdam) and an MA in Architecture (AUTH). Athina’s research focuses on Urban Studies and, particularly, on social innovation, urban governance and social movements. She has published in several international academic journals.
Giorgos Gritzas
Giorgos Gritzas is Associate Professor at the Department of Spatial Planning and Development of AUTH on: “Geography and Social and Solidarity Economy for Spatial Development”.
He is also Director of the Postgraduate Program “Social and Solidarity Economy” at the Hellenic Open University. He teaches, Participatory planning, Social-Solidarity Economy, Social Innovation, Commons, Geography, Spatial “Development”. He is the supervisor of 5 PhD theses (circular economy / commons, energy communities, networking of Social Economy ventures, “development” of mountainous areas), while he was the supervisor of two PhD that were completed (alternative agro-food networks, public space / commons and spatial planning).
Eirini Iliopoulou
Postdoctoral researcher, School of Spatial Planning and Development, AUTH
Eirini Iliopoulou is an Architect – Urbanist and holds a PhD in Urban Studies (summa cum laude), awarded by the TU-Berlin and Diploma awarded by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her experience includes proposal writing, management, implementation, monitoring & evaluation of EU-funded and national projects and programmes in the fields of urban development and culture. Her research and professional interests focus on Civic Participation in Integrated Territorial Development, Socio-spatial Conflicts, the role of Culture in Sustainable Urban Development.
Νάντια Καλαρά
Η Νάντια Καλαρά, ΜΑ, PhD, είναι εικαστικός καλλιτέχνης και αναπληρώτρια καθηγήτρια στο τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων Μηχανικών της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής του ΑΠΘ.
Έχει διδάξει επίσης στα τμήματα Αρχιτεκτόνων των Πανεπιστημίων Θεσσαλίας και Πατρών. Ζει και εργάζεται στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Το έργο της επιχειρεί να δημιουργήσει μια διαλεκτική μεταξύ ιστορίας, τοπίου και αρχιτεκτονικής. Πραγματεύεται την έννοια του αποσπάσματος, την εμπειρία του ερειπίου, την παράδοση της τοποειδικής τέχνης, την περιήγηση ως μεθοδολογικό εργαλείο. Η πρακτική της διατρέχει πολλά μέσα και υλικά. Συχνά, η εκθεσιακή διάταξη δημιουργεί μια σύνθετη αντιληπτική κατάσταση θέασης, επίσκεψης και ανάγνωσης. Καλέι τον θεατή σε μια ανασυγκρότηση του νοήματος του χώρου διατυπώνοντας σχόλια πάνω στη φύση και τη συνθήκη της αναπαράστασης.
Nikos Kalogirou
Nikos Kalogirou studied architecture in Thessaloniki, Greece (Dip. Arch. AUTh 1975), continued with postgraduate studies in Paris, France
(Certificat CRU 1976, DEA EHESS 1976, DEA Paris 1 1977, Diplôme CRU 1979), and obtained his PhD from the Paris-1-Panthéon-Sorbonne University, France (1979).
He is an emeritus professor at the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He was a visiting professor at the postgraduate school of Architectural Association (London, 1991-1993), professor and director of the postgraduate program “Environmental Design of Cities and Buildings” (2000-2019) of the Hellenic Open University, Greece, and professor and director of the postgraduate programs “Museology-Cultural Management” (2013-2022) and “Environmental Architectural and Urban Design” (2015 to date) of the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
He has made significant contributions to academic administration, serving as Vice Head (2001-2005 and 2017-2019) and Head (2005-2009 and 2013-2017) of the School of Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Additionally, he was a founding member (2003-2005) of the School of Architecture at the Technical University of Crete in Chania, Greece, and also held roles as Vice Head (2004-2008) and Head (2008-2010) of the School of Spatial Planning and Development at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
Kalogirou has published over 150 articles in scientific journals, book chapters, and the proceedings of both Greek and international conferences. He has authored or edited 38 books on architecture and urban design. In addition, he has written more than 100 articles for magazines, newspapers, and websites.
His research and applied work focuses on architectural and urban design-planning, as well as the rehabilitation of sites and buildings. He has led or served as principal researcher in 35 projects assigned to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His architectural work has been featured in more than 130 architectural design magazines and exhibition catalogues, both in Greece and internationally. Additionally, he has been involved in the organization and curation of 20 major architectural exhibitions, with a highlight being the exhibition at the Greek Pavilion during the 17th Biennale Architettura in Venice (2021).
His work has earned 32 awards and distinctions in national and international architectural competitions. In 2023, he was honored with the title of Knight of the Order of Academic Palms by the Ministry of National Education and Youth of the French Republic, following a nomination by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Maria Karagianni
Maria Karagianni is an Architect-Urban Planner specializing in urban planning, housing, and the urban environment.
She studied Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and completed her postgraduate studies in Global Urban Development and Planning at the University of Manchester. In 2019, she obtained her doctorate as a scholarship recipient from IKY (State Scholarships Foundation) from the School of Architecture, AUTH, on urban planning, public green spaces, and the urban commons. She is a HFRI postgraduate fellow at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, AUTH.
Garyfallia Katsavounidou
Associate Professor, School of Spatial Planning and Development
Garyfallia Katsavounidou, Architect, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Urban Design and Planning in the School of Spatial Planning and Development at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). She has written the books: Child, City and Design: The Spielraum (Kritiki 2023), The City at Human Scale (Kallipos Hellenic Academic Open Textbooks, 2023), and Invisible Parentheses: 27 cities in Thessaloniki (Patakis, 2004), and translated Jan Gehl’s classic book Life between buildings (University Press of Thessaly, 2013) in Greek. Her research and teaching focuses on human-centered urbanism, social and psychological approaches of Architecture and space, urban history, and child-friendly cities.
Matina Kapsali
Postdoctoral Researcher – Urban Studoes Foundation Fellow, University of Manchester.
Matina Kapsali is an urban geographer and planner. She studied Architectural Engineering at Auth. and she holds an MSc from the University of Manchester in Global Urban Development and Planning. In 2019, she completed her doctoral thesis at the Department of Architecture, Auth on “The politics of urban commons: Participatory urbanism in Thessaloniki during the 2010 crisis” (IKY Scholar). She has published in international and national peer-reviewed scientific journals and books and has presented the research results of her work in international and national conferences. Her research areas are urban commons, urban political movements, housing and public space.
Βασίλης Κολώνας
Απόφοιτος του τμήματος Aρχιτεκτόνων του AΠΘ ακολούθησε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Παρίσι στους τομείς Ιστορίας της Τέχνης, Μουσειολογίας και Αναστήλωσης Ιστορικών μνημείων.
Από το 2002-2022, καθηγητής στο Tμήμα Aρχιτεκτόνων του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας.
Βασικός συντελεστής και υπεύθυνος ελληνικών και ευρωπαϊκών ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων σχετικών με τη μελέτη και την έρευνα της Iστορίας της αρχιτεκτονικής του 19ου και 20ού αιώνα στην Eλλάδα και τις χώρες της ανατολικής Mεσογείου και της Μαύρης Θάλασσας. Έχει εργασθεί ως ερευνητής και έχει διδάξει σε πανεπιστήμια των ΗΠΑ, του Καναδά και της Γαλλίας.
Μέλος της διεθνούς επιστημονικής επιτροπής της European Association of Urban History (2012-2022) . Είναι συγγραφέας 10 μονογραφιών.

Paraskevi Kourti
Paraskevi Kourti is an Architect with a Ph.D. in urban planning.
She began her career with the planning and supervision of public projects, mainly on the urban scale, and then gained experience and further education in urban development, European and national urban policies as well as strategic management. Today she works as Head of the Department of Urban Planning of Central Macedonia of the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia-Thrace.
Sasa Lada
Sasa Lada is an architect, Professor Emerita in architectural design and gender studies, School of Architecture,
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her main teaching and research interests, since 1985, focused on the feminist critique of the architectural and spatial analysis of contemporary societies. She has extensive international experience from numerous cross-national projects and networks in Gender Studies. She has published a number of books and many articles in scientific magazines which focused on the topics of habitation, gender, sexuality and urban space.
Lois Labrianidis
Retired Professor at the University of Macedonia. He is an economic geographer (BA – Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki 1977,

Ηλιάννα Μάγγου
Χωροτάκτης πολεοδόμος, απόφοιτη του Τμήματος Μηχανικών Χωροταξίας και Ανάπτυξης της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής
του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στον Περιβαλλοντικό Σχεδιασμό στο Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης και ειδίκευση στη χωροχρονική μεταβολή χρήσεων γης εντός προστατευόμενων περιοχών. Εργάζεται στον ιδιωτικό τομέα υποστηρίζοντας χωροταξικές και πολεοδομικές μελέτες. Τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα αφορούν την κοινωνική και αστική γεωγραφία, τη χωρική ανάλυση μέσω συστημάτων γεωγραφικών πληροφοριών, τις χρήσεις γης και τη χωροχρονική μεταβολή τους.
Stratos Nalmpantis
PhD Candidate, School of Spatial Planning and Development, AUTH
Stratos Nalmpantis is a Geographer (University of the Aegean) and holds a Master in Urban and Regional Planning (University of Thessaly), as an IKY fellow. Currently he is a PhD Student at the School of Planning at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the field of Alternative Economies. Mr. Nalmpantis is participating in research projects related to Networking of Social and Solidarity Economy; and Social Innovation, while he has working experience in INGO’s and IOM.
Sokratis Seitanidis
Sokratis Seitanidis is an urban and regional planner and urban designer. He studied Urban and Regional Planning (University of Thessaly)
and holds an MA in Urban Design (Cardiff University), an MSc in Transportation Planning (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and a Phd in “Spatial Planning and the Commons” (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). He has participated in various projects, working either in the public, or in the private sector and in various scales from neighborhood design to regional planning. He is author or co-author in articles and reports within these broad themes. He currently works for the regional authorities of Central Macedonia. Along with his professional activity, he supports local movements as an urban planner specialized in action research for participatory planning and the urban commons.
Dimitra Siatitsa
Post-doctoral researcher working on urban & housing studies, socio-spatial inequalities, sustainable development,
public policies, cooperative housing and social movements, with a focus on Southern Europe. She holds a PhD from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (NTUA), a master’s degree on Architecture and Urban Culture (FPC/UPC) and a diploma on Architecture (NTUA). She has collaborated in European and Greek research programmes and has professional experience in policy-making on social welfare and housing at central and local government level. She is a member of research networks and groups.
Eirini-Erifili Tzekou
Postdoctoral researcher, School of Spatial Planning and Development, AUTH.
Eirini-Erifili Tzekou is a postdoctoral researcher, currently collaborating with the School of Spatial Planning and Development (AUTH), where she completed her doctoral thesis, exploring the relationship between Alternative Food Networks and alternative approaches to spatial development. She holds an MSc in Economic and Regional Development, School of Economics (AUTH) and a Diploma in Accounting and Finance (University of Macedonia). Her research interests focus on social and solidarity economy, especially alternative food networks, social innovation and networking/public-community partnerships, as well as degrowth and post-development.
Marianthi Tsakaldimi
Dr. Tsakaldimi is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment of AUTH.
Her expertise is developed through research and teaching in the fields of ecology, silviculture, biodiversity, urban forestry and landscaping, restoration of degraded ecosystems, natural regeneration of forest ecosystems, plant nursery production. She has published numerous research papers. She is acting as a reviewer in 24 international peer-review scientific journals. For her published work there are over 600 citations in the international bibliography. She is a member of the editorial board of international scientific journals.
Haris Tsavdaroglou
Postdoctoral researcher, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Haris Tsavdaroglou holds a PhD in Urban Planning from the school of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is currently the PI in the HFRI research program “Refugees’ solidarity city. Institutional policies and commoning practices in Athens, Mytilene and Thessaloniki” (RECITY), Postdoctoral Researcher in the Horizon 2020 program “Arrival infrastructures as sites of integration for recent newcomers” (REROOT) and teaches Human Geography at the Hellenic Open University and Sociology of Space at the School of Spatial Planning and Development at AUTH. His research interests include critical urban theory, autonomy of migration, the right to the city, inventions of urban commons and intersectional, decolonial and affective geographies.
Konstantinos Tsintsis
Architect AUTH.
Konstantinos Tsintsis was born in 1999 in Kalamata, in southern Greece. He graduated from the 3rd High School of Kalamaria, and in 2023 he received his Architecture Diploma from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Throughout his graduate studies, he has been involved with all scales of architectural design, while being passionate about the technical qualities of Architecture. He has collaborated with professionals from the industry and worked at two architecture offices, while also participating in some student architecture competitions and design workshops.
