School of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development provides the main institutional framework for the project of the Atlas. The Department offers a fruitful environment for developing the project due to its long-lasting expertise in spatial analysis and planning. The Department maintains the responsibility of the Planning Archive of Thessaloniki, curated by the Central Library of AUTh. Thessaloniki Social Atlas is affiliated with the Research Unit for South European Cities, which aims at a systematic study and documentation of the specificities of the cities of the European South in the European and the global context and its dialectic encounter with the global discussion. The Research Unit pursues research with regard to contemporary planning and socio-environmental challenges of cities in the European South and the South-Eastern Mediterranean in the framework of regional and global urbanisation processes.

National Centre for Social Research

The National Centre for Social Research has played a key role in the production of social atlases since its foundation.

  • Kayser B (1964) Atlas Économique et Social de la Grèce, Athènes, ΕΚΚΕ.
  • Nikolakopoulos H. (1984) Atlas of the legislative elections of the 18th of October 1981, Athens, EKKE.
  • Maloutas T. (ed.) (2000, 2nd edition 2002) Social and Economic Atlas of Greece.1: Cities, Athens-Volos, EKKE-University of Thessaly.

In recent years, in collaboration with ELSTAT, EKKE has developed the online Panorama of Greek Census Data, which is used as a data source in articles of the Atlas.

Hellenic Statistical Authority

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) is the official producer of statistical population data for Greece on census scale. Over many decades ELSTAT has been producing detailed and reliable census data through the Population and Housing Censuses undertaken every decade.
